Justin Lawrence is a leading expert in Title IX and Sexual Assault Prevention at the national level. He is the Title IX Administrator at Wayland Baptist University where he also serves as the Associate Dean of the School of Behavioral and Social Sciences and Professor of Criminal Justice. Dr. Lawrence also teaches undergraduate and graduate level courses on Sexual Assault, Domestic Violence, Victim Advocacy, and Trauma Informed Investigations. He regularly trains NCAA and NAIA Athletic Departments and Student Athletes across the country on the intersection of sexual violence, interpersonal violence, and high-risk populations. Dr. Justin Lawrence is a leading expert on Title IX and Sexual Harassment at the national level. He is one of a handful of people in United States to have received training by the FBI and NYPD Special Victims Unit.
Dr. Lawrence is a Certified Title IX Administrator and his area of expertise is the training, administrative compliance, investigation, and adjudication of cases of sexual discrimination, harassment, and assault on campus, including instances of relationship violence, gender bias, and misconduct within athletic departments, executive staff, faculty, staff, fraternities, sororities, and other campus communities.
Dr. Lawrence also trains and certifies Title IX Coordinators and the Collegiate and K-12 levels. He recognizes the need to address destructive behaviors and continues to broaden his areas of expertise based on the latest trends. In a very short time, he has transformed the lives of countless students, student-athletes, coaches, and administrators through his keen knowledge, compassion, ability to connect, and sharp humor.
Not only does he understand how to impact and connect with students, student-athletes, coaches, administrators and teachers on Title IX training and compliance, but he also knows what it takes to get to the bottom of complex cases in a manner that respects the rights of all parties involved. Furthermore, he knows what it takes to develop sound policies and procedures and implement best practices to ensure legal compliance and create a more equitable campus environment. He regularly consults and trains other institutions and system conduct officers and university discipline committee members.
Dr. Lawrence earned a Bachelor of Arts in General Studies from Texas Tech University in 2001. In 2005, he went on to earn both a Master of Business Administration and Doctor of Jurisprudence from the Jerry S. Rawls College of Business and the Texas Tech School of Law respectively. Finally, he also earned a Master of Arts in Religion in Pastoral Counseling in 2012 and Master of Divinity in Pastoral Ministries in 2014 from Liberty Theological Seminary.

Dr. Lawrence serves as motivational speaker to our Men’s Basketball Team. His influence has helped mold our team into a group of young men who believes we will be successful and are working hard every day to make that happen. Because of his influence, this is our hardest working, most focused group I have ever coached. I played basketball here at Wayland and continued professionally for 12 seasons all over the world. During this time I have heard numerous coaches and speakers come in and try to motivate a team or staff. However, I have never myself been so inspired by the way our locker room was moved each time Dr. Lawrence is with us. Although our players are his target, he literally moves all of my emotions, my staff’s emotions, as well as the players. He challenges our players to be the best team they can be, but also challenges all of us to be our best as individuals to make that happen. The investment of Dr. Lawrence with our football team each year during Fall Camp has been tremendous. This was not time spent and then everybody walks away with no real impact. Even today, our players and coaches still talk about our lives being in “a glass house.” In fact, when dealing with issues our players now respond by saying, “I live in a glass house.” As result of another one of Dr. Lawrence’s sessions, our players asked us to put up a banner in the dressing room, “What’s your why?” from the challenge he left with them. Again as we dealt with issues we always return to what they shared in “their why.” I strongly believe that the programming Dr. Lawrence provided allowed our players to have a distinct and unified focus year in and year out and as a result, we went on to have one of the best seasons in school history.
Dr. Lawrence, Thank you for the time that you spent with the Men’s Track and Cross Country Team. The kids really paid attention and were actively involved. After the session, they all said how easy you are to follow and listen because they relate to your delivery and you are down to earth.

We have had the pleasure and good fortune to have Dr. Justin Lawrence speak to our athletes on several different occasions, and in both small and large group settings here at Wayland Baptist University. In a large group setting speaking to all of our athletes, our students were focused in, engaged and intrigued by his message that “character counts” and good choices lead to exceptional results. Dr. Lawrence was captivating and enthusiastic as a speaker to our 565 plus student athletes. In fact I don’t remember a time when all of our athletes in that type of setting paid such close attention to a speaker.
In small group settings, and in fact every time I have heard him speak, it is clear that he understands the stresses faced by the student athlete today and that he cares about the success of our young people both on and off the playing field or court. I truly appreciate his sincerity and honesty in the way he communicated with our student athletes.
I have had a great deal of very good feedback from both our student athletes and our coaches. In fact, after talking to other coaches of teams he has spoken to, I consider us very fortunate to have him as close as we do as a member of our faculty and athletic success team.

I really appreciate you taking the time to speak to our team. I think you did a wonderful job and had their complete attention. I was surprised at how much they participated with me and Laurie in the room but that shows how great you are at discussing the subject. I think your presentation hit on everything they need to know to stay safe and not put themselves in a bad spot. With four freshmen on the team this year this was perfect timing to speak with them.

Dr. Lawrence’s presentation and educational session with our athletic staff was not only enjoyable, but hit on a number of critical points to remember as employees at a higher education institution. He broke it down and related it to our everyday interactions with student athletes. “Don’t turn it over, pass the ball” resonated with everyone in attendance. We are going through a different time in our society and as people susceptible everyday of coming face-to-face with controversial issues, it is good to know that there are proper procedures to follow. Dr. Lawrence lays it out so that we as coaches understand the best course of action when we are confronted with those issues.
Dr. Lawrence met with our student athletes the night prior to meeting with the staff in two sessions, male student athletes and then female student athletes. Feedback from our kids was all positive. They enjoyed him and learned how to deal with difficult situations.

About the Book

Challenging the Norms: A Guide to Counteract Rape Culture and Sexual Violence in America is a textbook written for undergraduate and graduate students. This book is the first of its kind. While many books focus on the investigation of rape, survival after rape, and stories of rape, the purpose of this textbook is expose sexual violence as prevalence problem on campuses of higher education across the United States. The goals of this textbook are to break the silence about rape and sexual assault on college campuses and to keep campus sexual assault in the public eye as well as to ensure understanding and solutions to this deep-rooted problem. The purpose of Challenging the Norms is to provide students with a focus on understanding the how and why of sexual assault and rape, grey areas of rape and sexual assault, along with sexual assault and rape prevention.
What sets me apart as an author and what sets my sexual assault prevention programs apart from any program being offered nationwide, is my ability to connect with student-athletes in a way they can understand, the rare perspective, practical experience, and research that I bring from my role as sitting Professor of Criminal Justice who teaches Rape, Trauma Informed Investigations, Domestic Violence, and Victim Advocacy at both the undergraduate and Graduate level, coupled with my role as a Title IX Administrator who oversees the entire Title IX process, conducts Title IX investigations, adjudicates Title IX Complaints, and trains students, student-athletes, coaches, faculty, staff, and administrators.
