A federal judge in Lubbock sentenced to more than 15 years in prison a Motley County High School teacher who admitted to having sexual contact with a 16-year-old sophomore student in 2016.

U.S. District Court Judge Sam Cummings sentenced Shonna Calaway to 188 months in federal prison as part of her Oct. 25 plea of guilty to a federal felony count of enticement of a minor.

Calaway, 48, faced a punishment of 10 years to life in prison. Cummings also ordered her to 10 years of community supervision after she is released from prison.

Calaway admitted to communicating with the student in December 2016 through the Snapchat app on her phone, invited him to meet her and sent him a picture of her genitals.

Shortly after, Calaway fetched the teen from a friend’s house in Roaring Springs and drove him to a “secluded scenic” location where the two engaged in a sexual act, according to court documents.

A federal grand jury indicted her in September, about two months after her arrest in Motley County for felony counts of improper relationship between a teacher and student and on count of sexual assault of a child.
