A former South Brunswick High School student is suing the district, saying the negligence of its leaders led to her sexual assault in a school stairwell.
The student, who is only identified by her initials, filed suit in Superior Court of Middlesex County on July 1. The school district, board of education, and high school are all named as defendants.
During February 2016, when the student was a freshman, she was sexually assaulted by another student in a stairwell while walking to class, the lawsuit says.
Security cameras in the stairwell were not operable during the assault, the lawsuit says. The assailant was later found guilty in family court, according to the lawsuit.
South Brunswick superintendent Scott Feder did not reply to NJ Advance Media’s request for comment.
The student was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and depression in the wake of the assault, and attempted suicide in June 2016, the suit says. She found it difficult to attend school following the attack out of fear she would run into the other student, the suit says.
“(Her) emotional distress was and is so severe that no reasonable person could be expected to endure such distress,” the suit says.
The suit says the district failed to provide adequate sexual assault prevention training and policies, and did not properly monitor students during the school day.
A lawyer for the student, Jeffrey Fritz, did not respond to NJ Advance Media’s request for comment.
