A University of Central Florida football player is accused of raping an intoxicated person inside a dorm room, officials say.
Demetreius Mayes Jr., 18, a freshman linebacker for the Knights, is charged with sexual battery of a physically helpless person and is being held at the Orange County Jail without bond.
An arrest affidavit said the incident happened Saturday night. Mayes met the victim at an off-campus party and she later told investigators she woke up as she was being sexually assaulted in a room on campus.
The report said Mayes blocked the door when the victim tried to leave.
According to an arrest affidavit, some teammates told detectives they saw Mayes taking the woman to his room and tried to stop him from making “a big mistake.”
“We’re dedicated to a culture of care that starts by believing the brave survivors who seek our assistance. This survivor’s well-being will continue to be a priority for our department and our university,” UCF police Chief Carl Metzger said.
UCF football coach Josh Heupel said Mayes has been suspended indefinitely.
“From what we know so far on this matter I’m upset and disappointed. This has no place in our program. Demetrius Mayes is suspended from all UCF football activities indefinitely. We are focused on ensuring that we provide compassion and support for everyone outside our program that has been affected by this,” Mayes said.
Authorities said Mayes told them the encounter was consensual. Mayes’ public defender argued he has never been in trouble before.
Mayes has bonded out of jail, telling reporters, “God’s got me,” before crossing John Young Parkway.
